There are significant differences in diabetic patients in various dermatoglyphic features when compared to normal. From the observation of earlier researcher, if there is increase in number of whorls, decrease in number of loops and arches in type II diabetes mellitus patients compared with normal individual. The main intent was to classify patterns of dermal ridges on the fingertips and palms of both diabetic patient and the normal individual. Diabetes Mellitus is the silent killer of manhood and public health problem. Dermatoglyphics which are allied with hereditary abnormality are valuable in diagnose of these disorders at birth or soon after. They do not vary among size or character throughout a person's life, apart from cases of serious injury that wound the dermis. The fingerprints of both hands are not the unique. This article aims to highlight the dermatoglyphic features and characteristics in some common clinical dental conditions, along with the method of registering prints, advantages and limitations of Dermatoglyphics.ĪBSTRACT Dermatoglyphic pattern refers to the configuration of physically occurring ridge on certain body parts specifically palms, finger, soles and toes. However, the studies done so far in this field prove that Dermatoglyphics holds great promise and is here to stay. This branch is relatively recent, still in its infancy, and requires further research to validate its role in dental field. Thus, they can help in assessment of intrauterine irregularities and prenatal detection of disorders. These patterns are formed in early weeks of fetal life, after which they remain unaffected by genetic and environmental forces. These patterns are individually unique, permanent and remain unchanged from cradle to grave. Today, these patterns have found their way in the medical and dental field, and are being utilized as a preliminary diagnostic tool for conditions with a genetic base. They have been traditionally used for foretelling the future and in criminal investigations.
